Legislation

In March 2012, the state of Michigan passed an autism insurance reform bill that covers medically necessary services for individuals age 0-18 years with an autism spectrum disorder, including applied behavior analysis.

This new law applies to any state funded insurance provider, including traditional insurance certificates and HMOs. Self-funded policies however, are federally funded and are therefore not required to follow state law although many self-funded companies have opted in to autism benefits. It can often be difficult to tell from your insurance card whether your plan is self-funded. We suggest calling your provider directly to find out for sure.
